Understanding Bicycle Accidents & Washington State Bicycle Laws
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration , when a bicycle accident occurs, it’s usually the bicyclist sustaining injuries, “As you might expect, when a crash occurs between motor vehicle and a bike, it is the cyclist who is most likely to be injured. Bicyclists accounted for 2.2 percent of all traffic deaths in 2016,” stated the NHTSA.
Additional data collected from the NHTSA also stated: “Bicyclist deaths occurred most often between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. (20%) and in urban areas (71%). The vast majority of bicyclists killed were male (84%) and the largest number of males injured were between 55 to 59 years old.” The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration further added: “Alcohol was a factor in 29 percent of traffic crashes in which the bicyclist (or driver) had blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) of .08 grams per deciliter (g/dL) or higher, the illegal alcohol level in all States. A large percentage of crashes can be avoided if motorists and cyclists follow the rules of the road and watch out for each other.”
According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, “With more people riding bicycles, following the rules of the road is especially important. A bicycle is a legal road vehicle, just like a car. This means that bicycle riders have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers.” While the WSDOT offers no substantial rule for bicycling with helmets, “…currently, there is no state law requiring helmet use. However, some cities and counties do require helmet use with bicycles. Here is a list of those locations and when the laws were enacted.”
